Velocity Racing enjoyed a remarkably successful debut
at the AMA/Prostar MRE Sunshine Nationals, where it
conquered the Street Bike Shootout category with team
member Mike Slowe setting a new elapsed-time record
and winning the event.
It was a great feeling. What a perfect way
to start things off, said Slowe, who shattered
the record during his very first official pass with
the team.
Weve worked very hard during the off-season
and I think we can do some damage this year,
Velocity owner Barry Henson said.
Velocity team members/customers impressively swept
the top four spots of qualifying with Kent Stotz forth
at 7.76, Chuck Cunningham third at 7.63, Henson second
at 7.53, and most notably newcomer Slowes pole-setting
record blast of 7.47.
Weve
revamped our turbo systems and I couldnt be
happier with the results, Henson said. Mike
Slowe is a true champion and is an incredible addition
to our team this season. Cunningham showed up to Gainesville
with a Hayabusa that had a Velocity Racing race kit
on it and we were all shocked at the quality of workmanship
Chuck and Lee Cunningham put into the bike. It was
one of the nicest Shootout bikes I had ever seen.
It was good to see Kent back on track. We know hell
be in the hunt for the championship as usual. My Blackbird
was just the same old bike it was at the World Finals,
very consistent.
Even after the 2003 winter rule change that said
these machines were prohibited from using the combination
of nitrous and turbos,
Hensons reliable Blackbird bettered its former
record without nitrous.
Everybody overestimated what the nitrous was
doing to my bike, Henson said. All I had
to do was turn the boost up one poundand it equaled
what the nitrous was doing to my bike. The turbo is
what is responsible for the numbers.
Henson predicts that these fearsome street legal
rocket ships actually have room for improvement and
are capable of surpassing the already lofty records
this season.
Theres more in them for sure, Henson
said. Were going to have both bikes freshly
prepped for the next race, I will be on the Hayabusa
next race and Mike will be riding the Blackbird. Our
goal this year is for me and Mike to finish one-two
in the championship hunt.
Next up for Velocity Racing will be the AMA/Prostar
Elmer Trett Nationals from Atlanta, GA on April 3rd-4th.
